Top Movies for Halloween

imageSnuggling up on the sofa and watching a great movie is all part of the modern halloween experience, so here’s a round up of some of the best movies out there for the big event. Movies for the Whole Family  It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1966):  An oldie but goodie that just keeps getting better with age.  Suitable for all ages and full of family infused warmth. Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie (2005):  A great choice for young and old alike, who can resist a bit of Pooh, Tigger and little Roo at Halloween! Casper (1995): A new classic for Halloween with enough excitement to keep the whole family amused.  The PG rating means that some scenes may be unsuitable for very young children but on the whole this movies makes for great family viewing. The Little Vampire (2000): Delightful family fun about a young boy who becomes best friends with a vampire.  Again rated PG, so maybe not the best choice for the very young, although the makers describe it as being ‘a movie that the whole family can sink their teeth into’. Movies for Older Children  Hocus Pocus (1993):  Bette Midler shines in this spooky tale of three witches from Salem who just happen to be sisters.  They are unwittingly conjured up into modern-day Salem by local pranksters and wonderful, spooky fun ensues.  Rated PG. Halloweentown (1998): A Disney Channel classic about a teenage girl who discovers that she is a witch and gets swept into another world known as Halloweentown, where she finds herself strangely at home with the other witches and ghosts that reside there. Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983):  Two brave young boys attempt to save their town and families from the evil Mr Dark and his spooky carnival which makes wishes come true – but at a price.  A memorable Halloween movie for teenagers. Adults Only Halloween (1993):  This John Carpenter classic is now synonymous with Halloween chills on the sofa and is, as yet, unsurpassed in it’s simplistic portrayal of the original boogeyman – Michael Myers. Halloween (2007): Rob Zombie’s remake of John Carpenter’s classic movie shows another side to the character of Michael Myers and attempts to explain how he became the epitome of all things evil. Scream (1996):  Wes Craven’s dichotic mix of horror and comedy has made it an all time favourite scary movie – and not just at Halloween. Interview with the Vampire (1994):  This wonderfully directed adaptation of Anne Rice’s novel will have you laughing, crying and ultimately mourning the fate of the vampires so skillfully portrayed by Cruise and Pitt.  Essential Halloween viewing.

Classic Movies of Year 2008

imageThere are some movies that did not make it to the top slots in year 2008. However they are a class apart in their own right and deserve special mention. Here are four good ones that are a must-watch for all movie fans. 10000 BC – This is the first 2008 movie to cross the $200 million mark. Though it received negative reviews from critics for lack of screenplay, the movie was one of the top runs in year 2008. This movie is a must watch for die-hard adventure movie fans and for the amazing acting/fighting skills displayed by Steven Strait (D’ Leh, the hero). Camilla Belle as Evolet is also a great actor who has been well utilized in the movie. 21– This is a story about Ben Campbell, who comes from a moderate family background, who tries to make money in casinos to pay his school fees at Harvard. The problem is that he has learnt it the wrong way from Prof. Micky Rosa, his math teacher; and things worsen when Ben is overcome by greed. This movie is a must watch for its brilliant screenplay and superb acting skills. 27 Dresses – A romantic movie on how Jane manages to become George’s bride; though initially called upon to plan his wedding with her sister! Katherine Heigl as Jane is amazing in the way she conceals her feelings for George. This movie is a must-see for rom-con fans and is one of the best movies of 2008 88 Minutes – This movie is a murder mystery plot on what happens when a forensic psychiatrist and college professor Jack Gramm receives a phone call saying he has only 88 minutes to live. How Jack manages to come out unscathed forms the rest of the story. Al Pacino as Jack is in his usual best and deserves a standing ovation for his near perfect portrayal of the lead character. It is a must watch movie for Al Pacino and murder movie fans. Watching movies online is the best way to catch up with movies that were released long back. Fans can watch movies online and save the trouble of trying to shop for DVDs. Have a great weekend!

A Note From The Filmmaker Of "the Two Plates"

imageThe Two Plates is the story of best friends who, after growing up on the mean streets of Richmond, Virginia embark on the ultimate hustle after they come across counterfeit plates. Their money laundering scheme and murdering ways lands them on the radar of not only Richmond authorities but also the Secret Service. A full on investigation and a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues but is there a rat? Everything’s about whom you can trust, and friendships will be tested. The Two Plates is a raw, gritty, edgy, fast-paced film that doesn’t tiptoe around the harsh realities of hustling and urban inner-city life style. The amount of violence and crime in the streets is real, and capturing the essence of that was important. The Two Plates not only explores the lifestyle of the hustler and the hood but also the characters that dwell there. These are real people…real people in bad situations, but they’re not that different from the rest of us. They face the challenges we all face, only under different circumstances.
A few years back producer Mean Gene and I (Jonathan Straiton, The Two Plates Writer/Director) produced a music video for hip hop artists, Assassin and Ambush, and that is where we met music producer Roderick Smith, Jr. We shared a mutual love of movies and began brain-storming plot lines. There, the theme for The Two Plates was born. Once production was a wrap on my first film Big Fish in Middlesex, I dove straight into pre-production on The Two Plates.
There was a very specific vision in mind for the filming of The Two Plates. We wanted the audience to be a part of the action without the roughness of a documentary. Test shots of both special effects and action sequences were rehearsed, filmed, and studied. We wanted the gunshot effects to be shocking and over the top, yet still realistic. Because of the dangerous nature of using squibs (a blood pack with gun powder and a wire fuse), the challenge was to safely re-create the look a squib provides. My special effects director, Tim Reaper, had to carefully design how to execute this difficult effect using fish tank tubing, safety pins, stage blood, and an air compressor. In the end, the results were stunning, and even though we all saw how the effect was created there were cringes all around when we watched the footage of the fight sequences.
Our overall goal was to make our independent film look like a multi-million dollar Hollywood movie. Once filming began it was important to capture the essence of the “mean streets” of Richmond. We filmed on the Northside and the Highland Park of Richmond, areas infamous for being “mean”. Often we were not greeted with the warmest of welcomes. The goings- on of the authentic street hustlers of the neighborhood didn’t stop around our production and there were times it seemed that life and the environment around us did in fact imitate art. There were challenges and roadblocks to overcome filming in these locations, but that didn’t stop us. We kept filming even when the production van was broken into and prop guns and supplies were stolen. We dusted ourselves off, replaced what we could, and kept going.
Post production lasted a total of 3 months with over 26 hours of footage shot between two cameras. The film was being cut and scored simultaneously. The digital effects were the most tedious in Post. It was decided early on, due to the environment we were shooting in, to use digital effects for the muzzle flashes of the guns versus blank guns. We did not want to draw extra attention to ourselves nor cause an outbreak of violence.
September 13, 2008 was a memorable day for all of the attendees at the historical Byrd Theater. The film sold out before the ticket office opened, forcing the theater owner to sell a handful of tickets to standing room only patrons. The film went on to tour the festival circuit for several months making it’s debut at “The B-Movie Film Festival,” “The Chicago International Hip Hop Film Festiva,l” and the “10th Annual Bare Bones International Film Festival” where the film won “Best Urban Picture.”
The Two Plates is now available OnDemand and will be available everywhere on DVD February 9th.  Reserve your copy today!

Beach Real Estate – How to Make Money in the Sun

imageBeach real estate is attractive property, from both an aesthetic and a financial standpoint. Humans instinctively find large bodies of water both beautiful and relaxing, as there is an urge to “return home” every now and then. As a buyer in search of a place to live, you may be willing to pay top dollar to live in such a place. Anyone who has ever experienced the right plot of California or Florida real estate can attest to that.

Online Movie Download Membership Websites Have Come Of Age In 2010

imageThere are many online websites for downloading movies, though the legality issue was still a major question mark until recently, especially since sites downloading music like Napster were shut down.  The big news for many computer junkies recently was that  the companies of  Movielink and CinemaNow are recognized as being the first major online sources for legal downloadable movies in the United States.  Previously the studios were shy about licensing online stores for anything but video rental, but now that has changed.
Movielink has managed this breakthrough by pushing forward with the backing of Universal, Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures, and Warner Brothers. Cinema Now is in a similar situation, which is part of the reason why these companies are experimenting to see how the downloads process works.  Movie downloads for new releases become available on the same day as the DVD release, and there is an ever growing backlist of previously made films all ready.  The one thing to keep in mind that makes these downloads different than others: you can not burn anything onto DVD, the download will only stay on your computer and can not be copied.
Pricing, according to studios, is currently “competitive” with the DVD release, which in many people’s minds makes it a bad buy, being way too expensive for what you get.  Classic movies are generally be priced at $13.99, with some movies priced as low as $9.99.  New movies are all over the map.  King Kong, for instance, will sell for $19.99, compared to $14.96 + shipping from retailers like Amazon.  The Bad News Bears (2005), on the other hand, sells for $26.00 online at Movielink, which is essentially the same price Amazon is carrying at the moment.  Most of these offerings, however, will not offer the extras found on today’s DVD and you instantly sacrifice the ability to take your movies with you on the go.
Encrypted or not, the standard DVD is at least portable.  All in all, this makes movie downloads from these sites, even with the reassurance of everything being acceptable and “legal” as really weak..  Until a better pricing appears, it would seem that these companies are doomed to failure.  At least they would be, if the movie companies did not own them.  Wait for a better deal.
