Bebe Daniels - Ten Days in Jail

"Ten days in jail."

Those were the words that weighed a ton in the life of Bebe Daniels.

Bebe Daniels, the good little bad girl of pictures, was driving through Orange County, California not long ago, and was pursued by speed-cop. He contended that the youthful star was going fifty-six and a half miles an hour. Now the laws in Orange County are very strict about fast driving.

Judge Cox is known nationally.

"When they exceed the speed limit in my county I send 'em to jail," he has said.

So the date was set for the jury trial and the court house was packed so full of folks interested in the case, that they had to move the "bunch" over to a larger place.

Bebe, as usual, was playing to capacity.

The trial lasted until the middle of the afternoon. Then the jury went into their little room, and came out a few minutes later with the verdict.

Bebe was guilty of speeding.

Judge Cox, a pleasant fatherly old gentleman, did not hesitate.

He immediately sentenced her to ten days in jail.

Ten days in jail!

It might well be a lifetime. Ten whole joyus days out of a star's life. No friends, no parties, no dances, and above all things - no telephone!

When the little lady was sentenced, picture fans pushed and crowded their way to where she was sitting. One sweet old lady, who had never missed one of her pictures said, "Don't you worry, honey. I'll do everything possible to make the ten days pass quickly."

And a thirteen year old boy, who had earnestly hoped for a sister like Bebe, promised to keep her supplied with roses during her enforced visit.

Bebe appealed in the case. It will be taken before a higher court.

She was released on bail and in ten days will probably know her fate.
